SANDSTONE is a clastic sedimentar rock usually made of the mineral quartz. The grains that make up the rock are the size of sand that you find on the beach. These grains have been pressed together with mineral âglue.â Like sand, sandstone can be any color, but is most commonly yellow, red, tan, brown, or white.
Other kinds of rocks formed from grains compressed together are shale, mudstone, and claystone. These are made from smaller grains. The grains in claystone are so small that you canât see them with just your eyes.
